Blessed John Tavalli
Blessed John Tavalli (Italian: Giovanni Tavelli da Tossignano; born c. 1386 AD in Tossignano, Emilia-Romagna, Italy; died July 24, 1446 AD in Ferrara, Italy) was an Italian priest of the Congregation of the Jesuates who became Bishop of Ferrara and was known for his learning, his reform of the diocese, and his charity to the poor. He is venerated as a Blessed of the Church. His feast day is July 24.
Renouncing the study of law for the religious life, John Tavelli (also spelled Tavalli) joined the Jesuates and gained fame as a spiritual writer and translator before being made Bishop of Ferrara, which he governed with zeal and humility. His cult was confirmed in 1748.

Biography
Giovanni Tavelli was born about 1386 at Tossignano, in the region of Emilia-Romagna in Italy, and is often known as Giovanni Tavelli da Tossignano. As a young man he began the study of law, but he turned instead to the religious life, entering the Congregation of the Jesuates (the Gesuati), a community founded by Blessed John Colombini devoted to prayer, penance, and care of the sick and poor.
Tavelli became a noted spiritual writer and translator, rendering devotional works into Italian for the benefit of the faithful, and he was esteemed for his learning and holiness. He held offices in his congregation and was known as a wise director of souls.
In 1431 he was made Bishop of Ferrara. As bishop he governed his diocese with energy and gentleness, reforming the clergy, preaching, and giving himself especially to the relief of the poor, the sick, and prisoners. He founded or supported charitable institutions and was beloved by his people. During his episcopate the Council of Ferrara-Florence, seeking the reunion of the Latin and Greek Churches, met for a time in his city.
John Tavelli died at Ferrara on July 24, 1446. His cult was confirmed in 1748 by Pope Benedict XIV. His feast is kept on July 24.
