Blessed John Soreth
Blessed John Soreth (French: Jean Soreth; born c. 1394 AD in Caen, Normandy, France; died July 25, 1471 AD in Angers, France) was a French Carmelite friar who served as Prior General of the Carmelite Order and was one of its foremost reformers. He promoted the observant reform among the friars and gave a canonical foundation to the Carmelite nuns (the Second Order). He is venerated as a Blessed of the Carmelite Order. His feast day is July 25.
As Prior General for over eighteen years, John Soreth worked to restore fervor and regular observance in the Carmelite houses and encouraged the establishment of communities of Carmelite nuns and tertiaries. He was beatified in 1866.

Biography
John Soreth was born about 1394 at Caen in Normandy, France. He entered the Carmelite Order in his native city as a young man and pursued studies, becoming a master of theology at the University of Paris. He was esteemed for his learning and for the holiness and regularity of his life.
In 1451 he was elected Prior General of the Carmelite Order, an office he held until his death some twenty years later. Living in an age when many religious communities had grown lax, Soreth devoted his generalate to the reform of the Order. He traveled tirelessly to visit its houses, working to restore common life, poverty, prayer, and regular observance, and he fostered the Carmelite observant reform.
Soreth is especially remembered for his role in the development of the Carmelite nuns. In 1452 the papal bull *Cum nulla* authorized the reception of women into the Order, and Soreth gave the Carmelite nuns (the Second Order) a firm canonical foundation and constitutions, as well as encouraging communities of Carmelite tertiaries. This work prepared the way for the later flowering of Carmel, including the reform of Saint Teresa of Ávila in the following century.
John Soreth died at Angers on July 25, 1471. He was beatified in 1866 by Pope Pius IX. His feast is kept on July 25.
