Blessed John Rugg
Blessed John Rugg (died November 15, 1539 AD in Reading, Berkshire, England) was an English Catholic priest, a prebendary attached to Reading Abbey, who was executed under King Henry VIII for his fidelity to the Catholic Church and the Holy See. He was put to death together with Blessed Hugh Faringdon, the last abbot of Reading, and Blessed John Eynon, and is honored among the English Martyrs. His feast day is November 15.
A learned priest resident at Reading Abbey, John Rugg refused to accept the royal supremacy over the Church. He was condemned with the abbot and another priest and executed before the abbey gate. He was beatified in 1895.

Biography
John Rugg was an English Catholic priest who, in the reign of King Henry VIII, held a prebend and resided at the great Benedictine monastery of Reading Abbey in Berkshire. He was a man of learning, and he had retired to Reading to live under the protection of the abbey.
When Henry VIII broke with Rome and demanded that his subjects acknowledge him as Supreme Head of the Church in England, and when the king moved to suppress the monasteries, the abbot of Reading, Blessed Hugh Faringdon (Cook), refused to surrender the abbey or to deny the authority of the pope. John Rugg stood with the abbot in this fidelity.
Rugg was arrested with Abbot Hugh and another priest, Blessed John Eynon, and all three were condemned for treason—that is, for refusing to accept the royal supremacy and for upholding the Catholic faith and the Holy See.
On November 15, 1539, John Rugg was hanged, drawn, and quartered at Reading, before the gate of the abbey, together with his companions. He was beatified on December 13, 1895, by Pope Leo XIII, among the English Martyrs. His feast is kept on November 15.
