Biography

John Naisen was a Japanese Catholic who lived during the era of the Tokugawa shogunate's suppression of Christianity. The Church in Japan, built up by the missions from 1549 onward, had grown to number hundreds of thousands of faithful before the shogunate moved to eradicate it in the first decades of the seventeenth century.

In this persecution, many Japanese Christians—priests, religious, catechists, and laypeople—were arrested and put to death, especially at Nagasaki, the heart of Japanese Catholicism. John Naisen was among those who refused to apostatize and were martyred for the faith.

He was beatified among the Martyrs of Japan, a number of whom were raised to the altars by Pope Pius IX on July 7, 1867. His feast is kept with the Japanese martyrs on September 10. Detailed records of his individual life are limited, but his witness is remembered with that of his fellow martyrs.
