Biography

John Mason was an English Catholic layman during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, at a time when the practice of the Catholic faith and, above all, the harboring of Catholic priests were treated as capital crimes against the state.

Under the Elizabethan penal laws, priests ordained abroad who came to England to minister to Catholics were regarded as traitors, and those who assisted or sheltered them shared in their peril. John Mason was among the lay Catholics who supported the hunted clergy in their secret ministry.

He was arrested and condemned, and on May 10, 1591, he was executed at Tyburn in London, together with the priest Blessed Montford Scott and other Catholics who died that day for the faith.

John Mason was beatified on December 15, 1929, by Pope Pius XI, among the English Martyrs. His feast is kept on May 10.
