Biography

John Baptist Turpin du Cormier was born September 25, 1736, in Laval, in the province of Maine (now the department of Mayenne), France. He was ordained a Catholic priest and served the faithful of his region.

When the French Revolutionary government imposed the Civil Constitution of the Clergy (1790), requiring all priests to swear loyalty to the state and accept government control of the Church, he refused. He continued to minister clandestinely as a "refractory priest."

During the Terror, he was arrested and guillotined in Laval on January 19, 1794. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II as one of the martyrs of the French Revolution in western France. His feast day is January 19.
