Blessed John Baptist Spagnuolo
Blessed John Baptist Spagnuolo (born April 6, 1447 AD in Mantua, Lombardy, Italy; died March 20, 1516 AD in Mantua, Lombardy, Italy) was an Italian Catholic Carmelite friar, Latin poet, Prior General of the Carmelite Order, and theologian known as "the Mantuan" (Baptista Mantuanus). He was one of the most widely read Latin poets of the Renaissance and a figure of deep Carmelite holiness. He was beatified by Pope Leo XIII on August 15, 1885. His feast day is March 20.

Biography
John Baptist Spagnuolo (Baptista Mantuanus) was born April 6, 1447, in Mantua, the city of Virgil. He entered the Carmelite Order and was ordained a priest. He became one of the most celebrated Latin poets of the Renaissance — praised by Erasmus of Rotterdam, studied by Martin Luther in school, and referenced by Shakespeare — while remaining a devout Carmelite friar.
He was elected Vicar General and then Prior General of the Carmelite Order, governing from 1513 until his death. His Eclogues (ten pastoral poems in the Virgilian tradition) were used as a standard Latin school text across Europe. His religious poetry expressed deep Carmelite Marian devotion in humanist Latin.
He died March 20, 1516, in Mantua. He was beatified by Pope Leo XIII on August 15, 1885. His feast day is March 20.
