Blessed John Baptist Machado
Blessed John Baptist Machado (born November 23, 1580 AD in Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira Island, Azores, Portugal; died May 22, 1617 AD near Nagasaki, Japan) was a Portuguese Catholic Jesuit priest who was martyred in Japan during the Tokugawa persecution of Christians. He is venerated among the 205 Martyrs of Japan beatified by Pope Pius IX on July 7, 1867. His feast day is September 10.

Biography
John Baptist Machado (João Baptista Machado de Távora) was born November 23, 1580, in Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira Island, in the Azores. He entered the Society of Jesus and was ordained a priest. He was sent as a missionary to Japan, where the Tokugawa shogunate was increasingly hostile to Christianity.
He ministered clandestinely among the Japanese Catholics until he was captured. He was martyred by beheading near Nagasaki on May 22, 1617.
He was beatified by Pope Pius IX on July 7, 1867, among the 205 Martyrs of Japan. His feast day is September 10.
