Blessed Joachim Firaiama-Diz
Blessed Joachim Firaiama-Diz (also Joachim Hirayama Díaz; died September 10, 1622 AD in Nagasaki, Japan) was a Japanese Catholic layman and ship's captain who was martyred in the Great Martyrdom of Nagasaki during the Tokugawa persecution of Christians. He is honored among the Martyrs of Japan. His feast day is September 10.
Joachim Hirayama was the captain of a ship that had carried missionaries into Japan, and for this and his own Christian faith he was condemned. He was beheaded at Nagasaki on the day now remembered as the Great Martyrdom, on which many priests and laypeople were put to death together. He was beatified in 1867.

Biography
Joachim Hirayama (rendered Firaiama in older Portuguese-influenced spelling, with the surname Díaz) was a Japanese Catholic and the captain of a ship. During the Tokugawa shogunate's suppression of Christianity, he was implicated for having transported Catholic missionaries into Japan, where their entry had been forbidden on pain of death.
Arrested and imprisoned, he remained steadfast in the faith. On September 10, 1622, in what became known as the Great Martyrdom of Nagasaki, a large group of Christians—European and Japanese, priests, religious, and laity—were executed together. The priests and religious were burned, while many of the lay martyrs, including ship captains and those who had sheltered missionaries, were beheaded.
Joachim Hirayama was among those beheaded that day, giving his life for the faith. He was beatified on July 7, 1867, by Pope Pius IX, among the 205 Martyrs of Japan. His feast is kept on September 10.
