Blessed James Duckett

Blessed James Duckett (born c. 1573 AD in Westmorland, England; died April 19, 1602 AD in London, England) was an English Catholic layman and bookseller martyred during the Jacobean persecution for printing and distributing Catholic books. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on November 22, 1987, among the 85 Martyrs of England and Wales. His feast day is April 19.

Biography

James Duckett was born c. 1573 in Westmorland (present-day Cumbria), England. He converted to Catholicism and became a bookseller in London, distributing illegal Catholic books and devotional materials to the recusant Catholic community.

He was arrested and executed for the crime of distributing Catholic books, hanged in London on April 19, 1602.

He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on November 22, 1987, among the 85 Martyrs of England and Wales. His feast day is April 19.
