Blessed James Carvalho
Blessed James Carvalho (born c. 1578 AD in Coimbra, Portugal; died February 22, 1624 AD in Ozu, Japan) was a Portuguese Catholic Jesuit priest who was martyred in Japan during the Tokugawa persecution. He was tortured by standing in frozen water during the winter at Ozu in Iyo Province, Japan. He is venerated among the 205 Martyrs of Japan beatified by Pope Pius IX on July 7, 1867. His feast day is September 10.

Biography
James Carvalho (Diogo Carvalho) was born c. 1578 in Coimbra, Portugal. He entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and was ordained a priest. He traveled to Japan and worked secretly in the clandestine Catholic mission during the Tokugawa persecution.
He was captured and brought to Ozu in Iyo Province (present-day Ehime Prefecture, Shikoku). He was tortured by prolonged immersion or standing in freezing water during winter, a method designed to force apostasy. He refused to renounce his faith and died from exposure on February 22, 1624.
He was beatified by Pope Pius IX on July 7, 1867, among the 205 Martyrs of Japan. His feast day is September 10.
