Blessed James Andrade
Blessed James Andrade (born c. 1598 AD in Portugal; died September 3, 1632 AD in Nagasaki, Japan) was a Portuguese Catholic Jesuit priest who was martyred in Japan during the persecution of Christianity under the Tokugawa shogunate. He is venerated among the 205 Martyrs of Japan beatified by Pope Pius IX on July 7, 1867. His feast day is September 10.

Biography
James Andrade was born c. 1598 in Portugal and entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). He was sent to the Japanese mission and entered Japan secretly during the Tokugawa persecution of Christianity.
He was captured and subjected to prolonged torture, including the anazuri method (suspension upside down over a pit). He refused to apostatize and was martyred at Nagasaki on September 3, 1632.
He was beatified by Pope Pius IX on July 7, 1867, among the 205 Martyrs of Japan. His feast day is September 10.
