Blessed Isidore Bakanja
Blessed Isidore Bakanja (born c. 1885 AD in Bokendela, Congo Free State; died August 15, 1909 AD in Isongo, Congo Free State) was a Congolese Catholic layman and martyr who was flogged to death on the orders of a Belgian colonial official for wearing a scapular and preaching the Catholic faith to other Congolese workers. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on April 24, 1994. His feast day is August 15.

Biography
Isidore Bakanja was born c. 1885 in Bokendela in the Congo Free State (present-day Democratic Republic of Congo), a member of the Mongo people. He converted to Catholicism at a Catholic mission station and was baptized.
He worked as a plantation worker in the Congo Free State under Belgian colonial administration. He wore the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, prayed the rosary, and actively shared the Catholic faith with fellow Congolese workers. This brought him into conflict with the plantation manager, Léon Verbeken, who hated Christianity.
Verbeken ordered Isidore flogged — reportedly 100 lashes — for wearing the scapular. The flogging was so severe that Isidore survived for three months before dying of his wounds on August 15, 1909 — the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
He reportedly forgave his torturer before dying. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on April 24, 1994. His feast day is August 15.
