Blessed Ignazio Maloyan (born April 24, 1869 AD in Mardin, Turkey; died June 11, 1915 AD near Diyarbakır, Turkey) was an Armenian Catholic archbishop of Mardin who was martyred during the Armenian Genocide in 1915. He was shot dead after refusing to apostatize from the Christian faith. He was beatified by Pope Francis on June 7, 2015. His feast day is June 11.

Biography

Ignazio Maloyan (born Grigoris Maloyan) was born April 24, 1869, in Mardin, in southeastern Turkey. He was consecrated Armenian Catholic Archbishop of Mardin in 1910.

When the Armenian Genocide began in 1915, he refused to flee or to apostatize from Christianity. He was arrested May 28, 1915, and subjected to intense pressure to convert to Islam. He refused. He was marched with many of his parishioners on a death march and shot dead on June 11, 1915, near Diyarbakır. His last recorded words were forgiveness of his executioners.

He was beatified by Pope Francis on June 7, 2015. His feast day is June 11.
