Biography

Ignatius de Azevedo was born c. 1527 in Porto, Portugal. He entered the Society of Jesus and served as Visitor of the Jesuit missions in Brazil from 1566 to 1568. Recognizing the need for more missionaries, he returned to Europe to recruit, gathering 39 companions — priests, brothers, and novices — for the Brazilian mission.

Departing from Lisbon on the ship São Tiago, the group was attacked near the Canary Islands on July 15, 1570, by Huguenot privateers under Jacques de Sourie. Ignatius de Azevedo was killed first, reportedly holding a copy of the image of Our Lady of Loreto. All 39 companions were killed and their bodies thrown into the sea.

The group is known as the Forty Martyrs of Brazil. He was beatified by Pope Pius IX on May 11, 1854. His feast day is July 15.
