Blessed Hugh of Montaigu

Blessed Hugh of Montaigu (died c. 1136 AD in Pontigny, Burgundy, France) was a French Catholic Benedictine-turned-Cistercian bishop who served as Bishop of Auxerre and later retired to the Abbey of Pontigny. He was a church reformer and supporter of the Cistercian Order. He is venerated locally with feast day October 10.

Biography

Hugh of Montaigu served as Bishop of Auxerre from c. 1087 for nearly half a century, spanning the founding years of the Cistercian Order and the height of the Gregorian Reform. He supported the new Cistercian foundation of Pontigny within his diocese. In his final years he retired to the Abbey of Pontigny, where he died c. October 10, 1136. His feast day is October 10.
