Biography

Hugh Green was born c. 1584 in London. He was educated at the English College at Douai in the Spanish Netherlands (present-day northern France), which trained missionary priests for England during the penal period. He was ordained a priest in France and returned to England c. 1612 as a missionary priest.

For approximately 30 years he served the Catholic faithful in southwestern England, primarily in Dorset, secretly administering the sacraments to Catholic families at the risk of his life under the English penal laws, which made the exercise of priestly ministry a capital offense.

He was arrested in Dorset and brought to Dorchester, the county town. He was executed by hanging, drawing, and quartering on August 19, 1642 — three days before King Charles I raised his standard at Nottingham, marking the beginning of the English Civil War.

He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on November 22, 1987, among the Eighty-five Martyrs of England and Wales. His feast day is August 19.
