Blessed Hrabanus
Blessed Hrabanus Maurus (born c. 780 AD in Mainz, Germany; died February 4, 856 AD in Winkel im Rheingau, Germany) was a German Catholic Benedictine monk, abbot of the Abbey of Fulda, and Archbishop of Mainz. A disciple of Alcuin of York, he was one of the greatest scholars of the Carolingian renaissance and earned the title Praeceptor Germaniae (Teacher of Germany). He composed the great hymn to the Holy Spirit Veni Creator Spiritus (Come, Creator Spirit) and produced the encyclopedic De Rerum Naturis (On the Nature of Things). He is venerated locally in the Archdiocese of Mainz with feast day February 4.

Biography
Hrabanus Maurus (also Rabanus Maurus) was born c. 780 in Mainz. As a child he was offered as an oblate to the Abbey of Fulda c. 788. He was sent to study under Alcuin of York at the palace school at Tours c. 802-804, where Alcuin gave him the epithet "Maurus" (after the disciple of Saint Benedict). He returned to Fulda and led its monastic school, making it one of the leading intellectual centers of the Carolingian world. He educated a generation of German scholars and clergy.
He was elected abbot of Fulda in 829, a post he held until his resignation in 842. After two years in retirement at Petersberg near Fulda, he was appointed Archbishop of Mainz in 847, the most important see in the German Church. He governed the Archdiocese of Mainz until his death.
He produced the encyclopedic De Rerum Naturis (On the Nature of Things) and is traditionally credited with composing the great Pentecost hymn Veni Creator Spiritus (Come, Creator Spirit). He earned the title Praeceptor Germaniae (Teacher of Germany).
He died February 4, 856, at Winkel im Rheingau. His feast day is February 4.
