Blessed Gunther
Blessed Gunther of Niederaltaich (born c. 955 AD in Thuringia, Germany; died October 9, 1045 AD in Hartmanice, Bohemia, present-day Czech Republic) was a German Catholic Benedictine monk, hermit, and missionary to Bohemia. A kinsman of Emperor Henry II, he renounced his worldly career to become a hermit and later helped evangelize Bohemia. He is venerated with feast day October 9.

Biography
Gunther was born c. 955 in Thuringia, Germany. He was a kinsman of Emperor Henry II and initially pursued a noble career. After a religious conversion, he became a Benedictine monk at the Abbey of Niederaltaich in Bavaria.
He eventually withdrew from the monastery to live as a hermit in the Bohemian Forest (Šumava) on the frontier between Bavaria and Bohemia, where he also worked to spread the Christian faith among the local population.
He died October 9, 1045, at his hermitage in Hartmanice, Bohemia. He is venerated with feast day October 9, known in Czech tradition as "Vintíř."
