Blessed Giuseppe Benedetto Dusmet (born August 15, 1818 AD in Palermo, Sicily, Italy; died April 4, 1894 AD in Catania, Sicily, Italy) was a Sicilian Italian Catholic Benedictine monk, Cardinal Archbishop of Catania, and renowned servant of the poor who devoted his personal resources and those of his archdiocese to the relief of the sick and destitute of Catania. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 25, 1988. His feast day is April 4.

Biography

Giuseppe Benedetto Dusmet was born August 15, 1818, in Palermo, Sicily. He became a Benedictine monk and was appointed Archbishop of Catania in 1867, serving until his death.

He was created Cardinal by Pope Leo XIII in 1889 but used his elevated resources entirely for the poor — selling his cardinal's ornaments and episcopal furniture to fund relief. He personally nursed cholera victims and earthquake survivors. He became known as the "Cardinal of the Poor."

He died April 4, 1894, in Catania, having given away his worldly goods. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 25, 1988. His feast day is April 4.
