Gertrude van Oosten ("Gertrude of the East") was born c. 1301 in Voorburg, South Holland, in the Netherlands. She entered the Beguinage (Begijnhof) of Delft, where she lived a life of intense prayer, penance, and mystical union with Christ.
She received the stigmata — the wounds of Christ's Passion imprinted on her body — and was renowned for her visions and mystical experiences.
