Blessed George Matulaitis
Blessed George Matulaitis (born April 13, 1871 AD in Lugine, Suwalki Governorate, Russian Empire [present-day Lithuania]; died January 27, 1927 AD in Kaunas, Lithuania) — known in Lithuanian as Jurgis Matulaitis-Matulevičius — was a Lithuanian Catholic priest, bishop, and religious reformer who renewed the Congregation of Marian Fathers (the Marians of the Immaculate Conception), founded new religious congregations, served as Bishop of Vilna (Vilnius) during the tumultuous post-World War I period, and labored for the unity of the Catholic Church in Lithuania and Eastern Europe. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on June 28, 1987. His feast day is January 27.

Biography
Jurgis Matulaitis (George Matulaitis-Matulevičius) was born April 13, 1871, in Lugine, in the Suwalki Governorate of the Russian Empire (present-day Lithuania). He was ordained a Catholic priest and secretly joined the Congregation of Marian Fathers in 1909, working to renew and reform the congregation.
He was appointed Bishop of Vilna (Vilnius) in 1918 and served during the turbulent post-World War I period, navigating the complex Polish-Lithuanian dispute over Vilnius with pastoral wisdom. He resigned in 1925 at the Holy See's request and was appointed Apostolic Visitator to Lithuania.
He founded several new religious congregations and wrote extensively on religious life and Lithuanian Catholic culture.
He died January 27, 1927, in Kaunas, from complications of appendicitis, at age 55.
He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on June 28, 1987, in Vilnius, Lithuania. His feast day is January 27.
