Biography
Françoise Micheneau, known also by her married name Gillot, was a laywoman of Anjou during the French Revolution. Amid the persecution of the Catholic Church and the War in the Vendée, the faithful of the region around Angers who refused to renounce their religion were arrested in large numbers.
In the Reign of Terror of 1793–1794, Françoise Micheneau Gillot was among the lay women condemned for their loyalty to the Catholic faith. Like most of the lay martyrs of Angers, she was shot at Avrillé, at the site outside the city remembered as the Champ des Martyrs.
She was beatified on February 19, 1984, by Pope John Paul II among the ninety-nine Martyrs of Angers, whose collective feast is kept on February 1.
