Blessed Emmanuel D Abreu
Blessed Emmanuel d'Abreu (born 1708 AD in Portugal; died January 12, 1737 AD in Tonkin, Vietnam) was a Portuguese Jesuit priest and missionary martyr in Tonkin (northern Vietnam) who was arrested, imprisoned, and executed during the persecution of Christianity under the Vietnamese Trinh lords. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on May 5, 2000. His feast day is January 12.

Biography
Emmanuel d'Abreu was born in Portugal in 1708. He entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuit Order) and was ordained a priest. He joined the Jesuit missions in Asia.
He went to Tonkin (northern Vietnam) as a missionary. The Trinh lords, who exercised effective power in northern Vietnam, had periodically forbidden the practice of Christianity and the presence of foreign missionaries. Emmanuel d'Abreu was arrested for preaching and practicing Christianity in defiance of these prohibitions.
He was imprisoned and executed on January 12, 1737.
He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on May 5, 2000. His feast day is January 12.
