Blessed Elias del Socorro Nieves
Blessed Elias del Socorro Nieves (born September 21, 1882 AD in Yuriria, Guanajuato, Mexico; died March 10, 1928 AD near La Cañada, Guanajuato, Mexico) was a Mexican Augustinian Recollect friar and priest who was martyred during the Cristero War, the conflict between the Mexican government of Plutarco Elías Calles and Mexican Catholics who resisted the anti-Catholic Calles Laws. He was captured, tortured, and shot by federal forces. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on November 22, 1992. His feast day is March 10.

Elias del Socorro Nieves was born September 21, 1882, in Yuriria, Guanajuato, Mexico. He entered the Order of Augustinian Recollects and was ordained a priest, serving the Catholic community of Guanajuato.
During the Cristero War — the armed conflict between the Mexican government of Plutarco Elías Calles and Mexican Catholics who resisted the anti-Catholic Calles Laws — he ministered secretly as a chaplain and confessor to the Catholic faithful of Guanajuato despite the government's prohibition on public religious worship.
He was captured by federal forces near La Cañada, Guanajuato, on March 10, 1928. He was tortured and shot.
He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on November 22, 1992, in Mexico City. His feast day is March 10.
