Blessed Edward James (born c. 1557 AD in Breaston, Derbyshire, England; died October 1, 1588 AD in Chichester, West Sussex, England) was an English Catholic martyr priest who was executed at Chichester for the crime of being an ordained Catholic priest in Elizabethan England. He was ordained at Reims and returned to England on the English Mission. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on November 22, 1987, as one of the 85 Martyrs of England and Wales. His feast day is October 1.

Biography

Edward James was born around 1557 in Breaston, Derbyshire. He studied at the English College at Reims, where he was ordained a Catholic priest. He then returned to England on the English Mission to minister to the persecuted Catholic community.

He was arrested, tried, and condemned for the statutory crime of being an ordained Catholic priest who had returned to England. He was hanged, drawn, and quartered at Chichester on October 1, 1588 — the year of the Spanish Armada.

He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on November 22, 1987, as one of the 85 Martyrs of England and Wales. His feast day is October 1.
