Blessed Dominic Barberi
Blessed Dominic Barberi (born June 22, 1792 AD in Viterbo, Lazio, Italy; died August 27, 1849 AD in Reading, England) was an Italian Passionist priest who is celebrated above all as the priest who received John Henry Newman into the Catholic Church at Littlemore, Oxford, on October 9, 1845 — one of the most famous conversions in the history of English Catholicism. A self-taught philosopher and theologian of extraordinary gifts, he became a Passionist priest and was sent to England in 1841, spending the last years of his life in the English Midlands and the North, making converts, preaching, and suffering with great patience the mockery and hostility of an anti-Catholic English public. He was beatified by Pope Paul VI on October 27, 1963. His feast day is August 27.

Biography
Dominic Barberi was born June 22, 1792, near Viterbo in Lazio, Italy, to a peasant family. Orphaned young and largely self-educated, he entered the Passionists and became a respected philosopher and theologian.
He developed a deep apostolic longing for the return of England to Catholicism and was sent by his superiors to the English mission in 1841. He spent the next eight years in the English Midlands and the North, preaching, making converts, and enduring the mockery of a strongly anti-Catholic English public with cheerful patience.
On October 9, 1845, he received John Henry Newman (later Blessed, then Venerable John Henry Cardinal Newman) into the Catholic Church at Littlemore, Oxford — one of the most consequential conversions in the history of English Catholicism.
He died suddenly at Reading on August 27, 1849, at 57 years of age.
He was beatified by Pope Paul VI on October 27, 1963. His feast day is August 27.
