Biography
Darío Acosta Zurita was born on December 13, 1908, in Naolinco, in the Mexican state of Veracruz. He entered the seminary and, despite the difficult conditions imposed on the Church by the anti-clerical laws of the Mexican government, was ordained a priest in 1931, at a time when the very exercise of priestly ministry was severely restricted.
He was assigned to the cathedral of Veracruz. The state of Veracruz under its governor was among the most hostile to the Church, sharply limiting the number of priests permitted to serve. In this atmosphere Acosta Zurita carried out his ministry, including the catechesis of children.
On July 25, 1931, only weeks after his ordination, armed men entered the cathedral of Veracruz while he was teaching catechism to a group of children and shot him, along with others. He died a martyr for the faith at the age of twenty-two.
He was beatified on November 20, 2005, by Pope Benedict XVI, among the martyrs of the Mexican religious persecution.
