Blessed Cristóbal
Blessed Cristóbal (full name: Cristóbal Magallanes Jara; born 1869 at Zapotlán el Grande, Jalisco, Mexico; died 25 May 1927 at Colotlán, Jalisco) was a Mexican diocesan priest and martyr who died defending the Church during the Cristero War. He was executed by firing squad during the religious persecution that ravaged Mexico from 1926 to 1929, and was beatified on 22 November 1992 by Pope John Paul II as part of the 22 Mexican Martyrs of the Cristero War.
Cristóbal Magallanes was born into a pious Catholic family in western Mexico and ordained to the priesthood at the Cathedral of Guadalajara. He served faithfully as a parish priest in the region of Jalisco, ministering to his people with dedication and pastoral love. When the Cristero War erupted in 1926 due to the Mexican government's violent suppression of the Church and religious freedom, Cristóbal refused to abandon his flock despite the danger.
During the persecution, the government banned public worship and the wearing of clerical garb. Many priests were forced into hiding or exile. Cristóbal, however, chose to remain with his people, continuing clandestine celebrations of Mass and administration of the sacraments. He was eventually captured by government forces and, after refusing to renounce his faith or his priesthood, was executed by firing squad on 25 May 1927 at Colotlán, Jalisco.
His martyrdom was recognized by the Church as a sacrifice freely made for Christ. He was beatified on 22 November 1992 as part of the 22 Mexican Martyrs, celebrated together as a cohort of witnesses to faith during Mexico's most violent period of religious persecution. His feast day is observed on 25 May, the anniversary of his martyrdom.

Biography
Birth and ordination
Cristóbal Magallanes Jara was born in 1869 at Zapotlán el Grande in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, into a deeply Catholic family. He received a Christian education and, feeling called to the priesthood, was ordained at the Cathedral of Guadalajara. He was assigned to serve as a parish priest in the region of Jalisco, where he became known for his pastoral dedication and love for his people.
Priestly ministry during the Cristero War
When the Mexican government began persecuting the Church in 1926, banning public worship and the wearing of clerical garb, many priests went into hiding or exile. Cristóbal, however, chose to remain with his flock despite the mortal danger. He continued to celebrate Mass clandestinely, administering the sacraments and ministering to his people's spiritual needs in secret.
During the violent persecution of the Cristero War (1926–1929), the government hunted priests with special ferocity. Cristóbal was eventually apprehended by government forces. When ordered to renounce his priesthood and his faith, he refused. On 25 May 1927, he was executed by firing squad at Colotlán, Jalisco, shedding his blood as a martyr for Christ and His Church.
Beatification
