Biography
Contardo Ferrini was born April 4, 1859, in Milan, the son of an elementary school teacher. He showed extraordinary intellectual gifts from childhood — by adulthood he would master more than a dozen languages, ancient and modern.
He pursued advanced studies in Roman and Byzantine law at the University of Berlin under leading German Romanists, then returned to Italy to teach at the universities of Messina, Modena, and finally Pavia, where he held the chair of Roman law from 1894 until his death.
He was recognized as the greatest Italian scholar of Roman and Byzantine law of his generation, publishing extensively on the legal codes of Justinian and the history of Roman private law.
Despite his academic prominence, he lived as a celibate Franciscan Tertiary — offering his chastity to God while remaining in the university world. He was known for daily Mass, long hours of prayer, and extraordinary personal humility.
He contracted typhoid fever during a hiking trip above Lake Maggiore and died at Suna on October 17, 1902, at 43 years of age.
He was beatified by Pope Pius XII on October 13, 1947. He is the patron of Catholic universities. His feast day is October 27.
