Blessed Claudio Granzotto
Blessed Claudio Granzotto (born August 23, 1900 AD in Santa Lucia di Piave, Treviso, Veneto, Italy; died August 15, 1947 AD in Padua, Veneto, Italy) was an Italian Franciscan lay brother and sculptor who devoted his life to prayer, artistic creation, and joyful simplicity in the Franciscan tradition. A gifted sculptor who won prizes at the Venice Biennale before entering religious life, he renounced his artistic career to become a Franciscan lay brother, but was permitted to continue his sculpture as an expression of his love for God and Our Lady. He died on August 15 — the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary — which he had long requested as his date of death, fulfilling his desire to die on Mary's great feast. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on November 20, 1994. His feast day is August 15.

Biography
Claudio Granzotto was born August 23, 1900, in Santa Lucia di Piave in the Treviso province of the Veneto. He showed exceptional talent as a sculptor, studying art and eventually achieving recognition at the Venice Biennale, where his works won prizes.
Despite his artistic success, he felt called to religious life. He entered the Franciscan Order as a lay brother, but his superiors permitted him to continue his sculpture as an expression of his love for God and Our Lady. His works — particularly his Marian statues — were widely circulated in Italy.
He developed an intense Marian devotion and prayed for many years that he might die on the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor and bore his suffering with Franciscan serenity.
He died August 15, 1947 — the feast of the Assumption — in Padua, at age 46. His prayer had been heard.
He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on November 20, 1994. His feast day is August 15.
