Blessed Christian O'Conarchy
Blessed Christian O'Conarchy (Irish: Gilla Críst Ua Connairche; Latin: Christianus; born early 12th century AD in Ireland; died c. 1186 AD at Kilkenny, Ireland) was an Irish Cistercian monk who became the first abbot of Mellifont Abbey, the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland, and later Bishop of Lismore and papal legate for Ireland. He was a leading figure in the twelfth-century reform of the Irish Church. His feast day is March 18.
A disciple of the Cistercian movement, Christian was sent from Clairvaux to found and govern Mellifont at the request of Saint Malachy. As bishop and legate he worked to bring the Irish Church into conformity with the reforms of the age, presiding at synods and promoting monastic renewal.

Biography
Christian O'Conarchy—Gilla Críst Ua Connairche in Irish—was born in Ireland in the early twelfth century. He was among the Irishmen who, through the friendship of Saint Malachy of Armagh with Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, were sent to be formed as monks at the Cistercian abbey of Clairvaux in France.
When the first Cistercian foundation in Ireland was established at Mellifont in County Louth in 1142, Christian returned as its first abbot, planting the reformed monastic life of Cîteaux in Irish soil. Under his guidance Mellifont became the mother house from which many other Cistercian monasteries in Ireland were founded.
Christian was afterward made Bishop of Lismore, and he served as papal legate for Ireland—the representative of the Holy See in the reform of the Irish Church. In this role he presided over synods and worked to strengthen ecclesiastical discipline and the liturgical and canonical reforms of the age. He took part in the Synod of Kells and other important gatherings of the Irish Church in the twelfth century.
In his later years Christian retired from active governance and lived a monastic life, dying about 1186 at Kilkenny. He was venerated as a Blessed, and his feast is kept on March 18. He is remembered as one of the principal figures in bringing the Cistercian Order and the broader Gregorian reform to Ireland.
