Blessed Ceferino Jiménez Malla
Blessed Ceferino Jiménez Malla (1861–1936) was a Spanish Gypsy Catholic lay catechist and apostle of his people who devoted his life to the faith and evangelization within the Gypsy communities of Spain. Born into a Gypsy family in Granada, he embraced Catholicism with fervent devotion and committed himself to spreading the gospel among his own people. He was known for his purity of faith, his apostolic zeal, and his genuine love for his fellow Gypsies. During the Spanish Civil War, when religious persecution swept across Spain, he was arrested and executed for his faith on 9 August 1936, becoming a martyr for Catholic belief. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 4 May 1997, recognized as the first blessed of Gypsy ethnicity and as a model of missionary courage. His feast day is celebrated on 10 May.

Biography
Early life and faith
Ceferino Jiménez Malla was born in 1861 in Granada, Spain, into a Gypsy family. Despite the marginalization and discrimination that Gypsies faced in Spanish society, he received a solid Catholic formation and embraced the faith with remarkable sincerity and devotion. His family's commitment to Catholicism provided the foundation for his own deep religious convictions.
Apostolic work among Gypsies
Throughout his adult life, Ceferino devoted himself to the evangelization and religious education of his own Gypsy people. In a society where Gypsies were often viewed with suspicion and hostility, he worked tirelessly to bring the gospel to his community, to teach the faith to children and adults, and to foster Catholic practice among Spanish Gypsies. He became a beloved figure within the Gypsy communities he served, respected both for his integrity and for his genuine love for his people.
Martyrdom during the Spanish Civil War
When the Spanish Civil War erupted in 1936, religious persecution intensified dramatically. Ceferino, as an outspoken Catholic and catechist, became a target of those seeking to destroy the Catholic Church in Spain. He was arrested by Republican forces who opposed religious faith and practice. On 9 August 1936, he was executed by firing squad, giving his life as a witness to Christ rather than renouncing his faith.
Beatification and legacy
Ceferino's death was recognized by the Church as a martyrdom—he had given his life rather than abandon his Catholic faith. His cause for canonization was opened, and his reputation as a holy man and courageous apostle was formally acknowledged. On 4 May 1997, Pope John Paul II beatified him, making him the first person of Gypsy ethnicity to be officially beatified by the Catholic Church. His beatification was celebrated as a vindication of Gypsy dignity and as a recognition of the holiness possible within Gypsy communities.
