Biography

Caterina Volpicelli was born in Naples on January 21, 1839, into a noble Neapolitan family. She received a good education and moved in the cultured society of Naples, but from her early years felt drawn to a deep interior life. She came under the influence of the Jesuit priest Father Carlo Maria Centurione and through him encountered the Apostleship of Prayer, the worldwide movement of consecration to the Sacred Heart. She was instrumental in introducing and spreading the Apostleship of Prayer in Italy.

In 1874 she founded the Congregation of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Naples, dedicated to promoting devotion to the Sacred Heart, educating the young, and working among the poor. She spent her entire life in Naples, building up the congregation and its apostolates.

She died in Naples on December 28, 1894, and was beatified by Pope John Paul II on April 29, 2001.
