Blessed Carmelo Sastre Sastre (born February 4, 1907 AD in Puigpunyent, Majorca, Balearic Islands, Spain; died September 23, 1936 AD in Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain) was a Spanish Augustinian Recollect priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War — killed by Republican anti-clerical forces during the religious persecution that accompanied the outbreak of the war in the Balearic Islands. He was a member of the Augustinian Recollects, serving in Majorca. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II as part of a large group of Spanish Civil War martyrs. His feast day is September 22 (group feast) or September 23 (individual).

Biography

Carmelo Sastre Sastre was born February 4, 1907, in Puigpunyent, a mountain village in western Majorca. He entered the Order of Augustinian Recollects and was ordained a priest.

When the Spanish Civil War began in July 1936, Republican forces controlled Majorca briefly before the Nationalist takeover. During this period, anti-clerical violence targeted Catholic clergy throughout Republican zones. Father Sastre Sastre was arrested and killed on September 23, 1936, in Palma de Mallorca, at the age of 29.

He was beatified by Pope John Paul II as part of a group of Spanish Civil War martyrs. His feast day is September 23.
