Blessed Carlo Eraña Guruceta (born January 4, 1884 AD in Mañaria, Vizcaya, Basque Country, Spain; died September 17, 1936 AD in Deusto, Bilbao, Vizcaya, Spain) was a Spanish Augustinian Recollect priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War — killed by Republican anti-clerical forces during the religious persecution that accompanied the first months of the Spanish Civil War. He was a member of the Augustinian Recollects (an Augustinian reform congregation), serving in the Province of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on March 22, 1992, as part of a large group of martyrs of the Spanish Civil War. His feast day is September 22 (or September 17, the date of his death).

Biography

Carlo Eraña Guruceta was born January 4, 1884, in Mañaria in the Vizcaya province of the Basque Country. He entered the Order of Augustinian Recollects and was ordained a priest.

He was serving in the Basque Country when the Spanish Civil War began in July 1936. In the first months of the war, Republican forces in the Republican zones carried out a systematic persecution of the Catholic clergy — the most intense anti-clerical violence in modern European history.

He was arrested by Republican forces and killed at Deusto (Bilbao) on September 17, 1936.

He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on March 22, 1992, as part of a group of 51 Spanish Civil War martyrs. His feast day is September 17.
