Blessed Bertrand of Garrigue
Blessed Bertrand of Garrigue (born c. 1175 AD in Garrigue, near Montpellier, Languedoc, France; died September 6, 1230 AD in Orange, Provence, France) was a French Dominican friar — one of the first companions and closest friends of Saint Dominic — who was among the original members of the Order of Preachers, a powerful preacher against the Cathar heresy in the Languedoc, a man of intense prayer and great holiness, and one of the founders of the Dominican Province of Provence. He is one of the most historically significant blesseds of the Dominican tradition, having known and worked directly with Saint Dominic during the formative years of the Order. He was beatified by Pope Clement XII in 1881 [recte: cult confirmed by Leo XIII, 1881]. His feast day is September 6.

Biography
Bertrand of Garrigue was born around 1175 near Montpellier in the Garrigue region of Languedoc. He became one of Saint Dominic's earliest and closest companions — joining the anti-Cathar preaching mission in the Languedoc around 1206, when Dominic was establishing the apostolic approach that would become the Dominican Order.
He was one of the original friars of the Order of Preachers when it was formally founded at Toulouse in 1215. After the death of Saint Dominic (August 6, 1221), he served as Prior Provincial of the Dominican Province of Provence — one of the first provincial administrators in the Order's history.
He died September 6, 1230, in Orange, Provence. His cult was confirmed by Pope Leo XIII in 1881. His feast day is September 6.
