Blessed Bernard of Vienne
Blessed Bernard of Vienne (also Saint Barnard; born c. 778 AD in the Lyonnais, France; died January 22, 842 AD in Romans-sur-Isère, France) was a Frankish nobleman who left the court of Charlemagne to become a monk, founded the abbey of Romans, and served as Archbishop of Vienne. He is venerated as the founder of Romans-sur-Isère and one of the notable churchmen of the Carolingian age. His feast day is January 22.
Of noble birth and raised at the imperial court, Bernard embraced the monastic life at Ambronay before being called to the see of Vienne. As archbishop he founded the monastery around which the town of Romans grew, and he was drawn into the political and ecclesiastical struggles of the sons of Louis the Pious.

Biography
Bernard (Barnard) was born about 778 in the region of Lyon, into a noble Frankish family. As a young man he was brought up at the court of the Emperor Charlemagne and married, as befitted his rank. In time, however, he felt drawn to renounce the world.
With the consent of his wife, who likewise entered religious life, Bernard became a monk at the abbey of Ambronay, of which he later became abbot. His reputation for holiness and capability led to his appointment as Archbishop of Vienne, one of the ancient and important sees of the Rhône valley, about the year 810.
As archbishop, Bernard founded a monastery on the banks of the Isère; around it grew the town that became Romans-sur-Isère, which preserves his memory and his relics in the collegiate church that bears his name. He governed his church through the turbulent decades of the reign of Louis the Pious and the conflicts among Louis's sons, in which the bishops of Francia were deeply involved.
Bernard died at Romans on January 22, 842, and was venerated as a saint. He is honored as the founder of Romans and one of the significant ecclesiastical figures of the Carolingian Church.
