Blessed Bartholomew of Braganza
Blessed Bartholomew of Braganza, O.P. (born c. 1200 AD in Bragança, Portugal; died July 27, 1271 AD in Vicenza, Veneto, Italy) was a Portuguese Dominican bishop who served as the first Bishop of Nimosa (in Cyprus) and later as Bishop of Vicenza, Italy. A close associate of Saint Louis IX of France, he founded the Militia of Jesus Christ (a confraternity for the ransom of captives and the defense of the faith), and served as a papal legate and Church reformer. He died in Vicenza in 1271. He was beatified by Pope Clement XI in 1793. His feast day is July 27.

Biography
Bartholomew was born around 1200 in Bragança in northeastern Portugal. He entered the Dominican Order and became a learned friar. He was appointed the first Bishop of Nimosa (Nemesia) in Cyprus around 1252, serving the Latin Church in that Crusader-era island.
He was transferred to the Diocese of Vicenza in Italy in 1256. He founded the Militia of Jesus Christ — a confraternity devoted to the ransom of Christian captives and the defense of the faith — and was associated with Saint Louis IX of France and the Dominican intellectual tradition.
He died July 27, 1271, in Vicenza. He was beatified by Pope Clement XI in 1793.
