Blessed Anton Martin Slomsek
Blessed Anton Martin Slomšek (born November 26, 1800 AD in Slom, Styria, Austrian Empire; died September 24, 1862 AD in Maribor, Slovenia) was a Slovenian bishop, poet, writer, and educator who promoted Slovenian Catholic culture and became the first Blessed from Slovenia. As Bishop of Maribor (Lavant), he championed the Slovenian language, founded schools, moved the diocesan see from Seckau to Maribor, and wrote extensively in Slovenian. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in Maribor on September 19, 1999. His feast day is September 24.

Biography
Anton Martin Slomšek was born November 26, 1800, in the village of Slom in Austrian Styria (now Slovenia). He was ordained a priest in 1824 and served as a pastor, spiritual director, and educator in the Slovenian-speaking regions of Styria.
He became Bishop of Lavant in 1846, with his seat in Seckau in German-speaking Styria. In 1859, he transferred the episcopal see to Maribor, placing the diocesan center in a city with a significant Slovenian-speaking population — a decisive act for Slovenian Catholic identity.
He was a prolific poet, writer, and educator who championed the Slovenian language at a time when Germanization policies threatened it. He founded the Mohorjeva Druzhba (Society of Saint Hermagoras) in 1852, which became the most important Slovenian Catholic publishing house.
He died September 24, 1862, in Maribor. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II during the Pope's pastoral visit to Maribor on September 19, 1999 — the first beatification in the history of Slovenia.
