Biography
Anthony Page was born c. 1563 in Harrow, Middlesex. He was educated as a Catholic and sent abroad for his priestly formation in the era when English universities required Protestant oaths.
He was trained and ordained at the English College in Reims, France — the principal institution training English Catholic priests for the mission to England under the Elizabethan religious settlement. He returned to England knowing that arrest and execution awaited priests discovered exercising their priestly functions.
He ministered to the underground Catholic community in England until his arrest. He was tried for the "treason" of being a Catholic priest ordained by Rome and returned to England, convicted, and executed at York on April 20, 1593, by hanging, drawing, and quartering.
He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on November 22, 1987, as one of the 85 Martyrs of England and Wales.
