Blessed Anne Mary Javouhey
Blessed Anne Mary Javouhey (born November 10, 1779 AD in Jallanges, Côte-d'Or, France; died July 15, 1851 AD in Paris, France) was a French foundress of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Cluny, a missionary religious congregation that became one of the great apostolic forces for education and charity in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. A courageous pioneer of Catholic missionary work in West Africa and the Caribbean, she fought against slavery, educated freed slaves, and created a model colony of freed slave farmers in French Guiana. She was beatified by Pope Pius XII on October 15, 1950. Her feast day is July 15.

Biography
Anne Marie Javouhey was born November 10, 1779, in Jallanges, Burgundy, France. As a young woman she experienced a powerful call to religious life and to education. She survived the French Revolution and began organizing schools for poor children.
In 1807 she founded the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Cluny in Chalon-sur-Saône — the congregation later moved to Cluny, taking its final name from the great Burgundian abbey. The congregation quickly took a missionary direction: her sisters were sent to Réunion (1817), Senegal (1819), the French Antilles, and French Guiana.
Her most remarkable achievement was the colony of Mana in French Guiana, where she organized the resettlement and education of freed enslaved people, creating a self-governing agricultural community recognized even by the French government. King Louis-Philippe called her "a great man."
She died July 15, 1851, in Paris. Pope Pius XII beatified her on October 15, 1950.
