Biography

Anna Maria Tauscher was born August 18, 1855, in Sandow (now Zandów, Poland), the daughter of a Protestant pastor. She was raised Lutheran but converted to Catholicism as an adult, an experience of deliberate faith-seeking that shaped her entire apostolic identity.

After her conversion she worked among the poor and with orphaned children. In 1891 she founded the Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus in Germany, combining the Carmelite charism of contemplative prayer with active service to the poorest children. The congregation grew, establishing houses in the Netherlands, the United States, and other countries.

She traveled to the United States to establish the congregation there and died in New York City on January 20, 1938, at age 82.

Pope Benedict XVI beatified her on October 13, 2006, at St. Peter's Square, Rome.
