Biography

Ann-Joseph Leroux was a Franciscan Sister from the Mayenne region of western France. When the Revolutionary government suppressed religious orders in 1790, she was forced to leave her convent but continued living her religious vocation in secret, maintaining the Catholic faith in the region.

She was arrested along with 18 other Catholics — priests, religious sisters, and laywomen — and guillotined at Laval on January 19, 1794, during the Reign of Terror for her refusal to abandon her faith and her religious life.

She was beatified by Pope Pius XII on February 19, 1955, as one of the 19 Martyrs of Laval.
