Blessed Alfredo Ildefonso Schuster
Blessed Alfredo Ildefonso Schuster (born January 18, 1880 AD in Rome, Italy; died August 30, 1954 AD in Venegono Inferiore, Lombardy, Italy) was an Italian Benedictine cardinal who served as Archbishop of Milan from 1929 to 1954. A distinguished liturgical scholar and reformer, he governed the largest diocese in Christendom through the years of Fascism, World War II, and post-war reconstruction. He was known for personal holiness, asceticism, and pastoral charity. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on May 12, 1996. His feast day is August 30.

Biography
Alfredo Ildefonso Schuster was born January 18, 1880, in Rome, the son of a German tailor who had emigrated to Italy. He was educated at the Benedictine Abbey of Sant'Anselmo on the Aventine Hill and became a Benedictine monk. He rose to become Abbot General of the Benedictines of the Primitive Observance (1918–1929) and became one of the leading liturgical scholars in the Church, writing the monumental Liber Sacramentorum (9 volumes).
In 1929, Pope Pius XI appointed him Archbishop of Milan — the largest diocese in the Catholic world. He governed it for 25 years through Fascism (he was made a Cardinal in 1929), World War II (he tried to mediate in April 1945 between Mussolini and the Italian resistance), and post-war reconstruction.
He was known for extreme personal austerity — giving away his income, eating sparingly, working to exhaustion. Medical examination after his death confirmed the physical marks of prolonged fasting.
He died August 30, 1954, at the diocesan seminary of Venegono Inferiore. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on May 12, 1996, at Milan.
