Blessed Alfons Maria Mazurek (born March 1, 1891 AD in Baranówka, Volhynia, Poland (now Ukraine); died October 23, 1939 AD in Święty Krzyż, Świętokrzyskie, Poland) was a Polish Benedictine prior who was shot by German forces in October 1939 as part of the mass killings of Polish intellectuals, clergy, and community leaders during the early Nazi occupation of Poland. He was the prior of the Benedictine monastery at Święty Krzyż (Holy Cross), one of the oldest monasteries in Poland. He is among the 108 Polish Martyrs of World War II beatified by Pope John Paul II on June 13, 1999. His feast day is June 12.

Biography

Alfons Maria Mazurek was born March 1, 1891, in Baranówka, Volhynia (then Russia, now Ukraine). He entered the Benedictine Order and was appointed prior of the Abbey of Święty Krzyż (Holy Cross) in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains of Poland — one of the oldest and most symbolically important monasteries in the country, housing a relic of the True Cross.

When Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, the Nazi occupiers systematically murdered Polish clergy, intellectuals, and civic leaders. On October 23, 1939, German forces came to Święty Krzyż and shot Alfons Maria Mazurek along with others. He was 48 years old.

He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on June 13, 1999, in Warsaw as one of the 108 Polish Martyrs of World War II.
