Establishment
The Archdiocese of San Salvador was erected on 28 September 1842 by Pope Gregory XVI from territory previously part of the Diocese of San Miguel.
History
The see was elevated to an archdiocese on 11 February 1913 by Pope Pius X. It has been the metropolitan see for all of El Salvador since that time. The archdiocese endured significant challenges during the Salvadoran Civil War in the late 20th century.

The archdiocese covers the departments of San Salvador, Cuscatlán, and La Libertad in central El Salvador. It forms part of the Ecclesiastical Province of San Salvador.
