Establishment
The Archdiocese of San Pedro Sula was erected as a diocese on 2 February 1916 by Pope Benedict XV to serve the growing Catholic population in northern Honduras. It was elevated to the rank of metropolitan archdiocese on 31 May 1987.
History
The territory originally formed part of the Diocese of Comayagua. Early bishops focused on establishing parishes and schools in the developing industrial city of San Pedro Sula. The elevation to archdiocese reflected the expansion of the Church in Honduras during the late twentieth century.
