Establishment
The Archdiocese of São Luís do Maranhão traces its origins to 1677 when Pope Clement X erected the Diocese of São Luís to serve the growing Catholic population in the Portuguese colony of Maranhão. It was later elevated to the rank of archdiocese on 10 February 1921 by Pope Benedict XV.
