Establishment
The Archdiocese of Manaus traces its origins to the erection of the Diocese of Manaus on 27 April 1892 by Pope Leo XIII, carved from the territory of the Archdiocese of Belém do Pará to serve the growing Catholic population in the Amazon basin.
History
The see was initially established to address the pastoral needs of the vast Amazon region during a period of economic growth from the rubber trade. It was elevated to the status of a metropolitan archdiocese on 16 February 1952 by Pope Pius XII. The archdiocese has overseen significant missionary activity and the establishment of multiple suffragan sees throughout the 20th century.
